Life Expectancy Seems To Be Slipping, Is It Time For A Change?

If you are one of the millions of hard working Baby Boomers who are looking for a little fun in the sun and/or adventure after leaving the workday grind behind there seems to be some more bad news. The latest life expectancy numbers now have men living only 75.6 years with women averaging out at 80.6.

These statistics are quite surprising since the number of people smoking has declined, those exposed to second hand smoke has declined, the life saving rate of emergency services has increased, the technological advances in medicine have never been more profound, and the number of prescription medications guaranteed to help us deal with many formally untreatable conditions is on the rise as well.

The retirement age for most people was around 65 but because of the current economic environment many people are having to work well in to their seventies just to be able to carve out a respectable amount of retirement assets to enjoy their golden years. One could conclude that socio economic issues have made us a society that realistically works from the cradle to the grave.

Life Expectancy Seems To Be Slipping, Is It Time For A Change?

Why aren't we living longer healthier lives with all the advances in modern medicine?

Obviously the path we are on needs to be improved and improved soon before it is too late. It seem like everyday there is another story about a high profile man or woman passing away unexpectedly in their 50's and 60's.

One thread seems to the connection of early sudden death with either cancer or heart disease.

As far as cancer goes there have been amazing advancement in treatment but oftentimes it goes undiagnosed for too long leaving only a few less than appealing options to extend one's life a few months, or years, at great expense and a substantial reduction in quality of life. In fact, my pest control specialist that recently lost his wife told me if he had it to do all over again he felt sure his wife would have declined the over 50 chemotherapy and radiation sessions which destroyed her dignity and only extended her life a few months if that.

Then there is heart disease. As far as heart disease goes there are many preventative steps that can be taken to reduce ones chances of having a heart attack or stroke.

One of these, which as a society we seem to be losing the battle against is obesity, with the United States recently being named the fattest country on the globe.

As ones weight increases more pressure is put on the heart. But while this is bad enough in itself what is even worse is that the heart (a muscle) must pump 100,000 times a day to keep up with the body's demands. Because of its daunting daily workload it gradually loses half of its pumping power by the age of 80. Now if you throw in cholesterol accumulation on the interior lining of the arteries (lumen) which narrows the arteries making the heart work even harder all of the sudden we have a deadly formula which can easily end up as a heart attack, stroke, heart arrhythmia, or simply some form of heart failure.

To avoid the narrowing of the arteries most medical professionals suggest lowering cholesterol levels with the help of prescription medications such as statins, or for the more natural health minded natural cholesterol reduction supplements, along with eating a low saturated fat diet (8 percent of calorie or less) and daily doctor approved exercise.

In conclusion, if you are one of the Baby Boomers looking at the latest life expectancy numbers with concern there is no better time to than now to make a change. If you don't know where to start your doctor will be glad to help or if you already know what to do, but simply aren't doing it, you owe it to yourself, and your family, to make a change before you become another statistic.

Obama Jokes Filling News Paper Cartoon Sections Again

It is amazing how things change so fast, and it seems like just a couple of years ago we were looking at really mean-spirited cartoons in the newspaper about President Bush. During that time President Obama could do nothing wrong, but now the tables have turned, and voters have spoken. One bumper sticker I recently read said; "Voted for Obama? How Is That Working out for You?"

Comedians and late-night talk show hosts are going to have a field day with this last election, and all the jokes will be on Obama, no one will be laughing with him, rather everyone will be laughing at him. However, just as the election polls closed and the results were finalized, President Obama took off with his entourage of several hundred people to Asia and India. In grand style they will be staying at the Tajo Mahal, and Obama will give one of his famous Teleprompter readings to the parliament in India.

Apparently, the Obama administration doesn't realize that India doesn't take too kindly to the show of such power and force. Long in their history they have been against superior authority and power, which was seen by Gandhi's Salt March to the sea in his protests. It will be quite interesting to see what the cartoonists, comedians, and talk show hosts say about this rather expensive trip on the taxpayer's dollar.

Obama Jokes Filling News Paper Cartoon Sections Again

It appears that Obama is leaving a trail of debris in his wake of not only his own party, but the American economy. In some regards people could say the joke is on us, but that is going to rapidly change. I expect the cartoons will get more intense and disturbingly frank about Obama's re-election future, and what the tea party calls; "his piss-poor leadership." Indeed, of course this is something I hope you please consider.

Teen Crime Statistics

Crime statistics show that approximately one-third of all victims of violent crime are teenagers, between the ages of 12 and 19. Today, homicide is the second-leading cause of death for young adults, after car accidents. Each year, more than 1,500 murder victims are children and teens. While many people think that crime doesn't regularly befall children, as it's part of living in a "grown up" world, the statistics show that this is clearly not the case.

Teens are not only the victims of violent crime, but sometimes the perpetrators, too. Almost half of all violent crimes are committed by perpetrators under 25 years old. In 2006, 15% of all arrests were made on people under the age of 18, while more than 1,100 homicide suspects were under the age of 18. Children and teens regularly become both the victims and the perpetrators of violent crimes. When watching the nightly news, it's not uncommon to hear about the shooting death of a teen, or of a group of teens who are accused of assault.

Those who watch the news every night or read the daily newspaper front to back might notice that teens who choose to do positive things for the community almost never ends up as the leading story or on the front page news. Such news simply does not sell.

Teen Crime Statistics

Many news shows, not to mention politicians, are obsessed with the teen crime rate. We hear in the news daily how crime is increasing dramatically in this age group. While these statistics may certainly be shocking, in actuality they have not changed dramatically over the past decades. In fact, crime statistics show that in reality, the youth of today are not any more criminally inclined than the generations before them. In fact, some crime statistics show that today's youth are even less likely to commit certain crimes, although the FBI statistics show that the teen crime rate is rising across some categories.

With that being said, the statistics certainly do show that all too often, teens are the perpetrators of both violent and non-violent crimes. Psychologists know that adolescents' brains are undeveloped, and too often, unsupervised kids are left to their own devices and make poor choices. Most teens' risky behavior, including not only criminal behaviors but also drinking, smoking, and other poor choices, tends to peak between the hours of 3:00 and 8:00pm. With no supervision or constructive activities during this time, the U.S. Attorney's General's Office says, "we reap a massive dose of juvenile crime."

What can you do about the potential for teen crime? If you're the parent of a teen or preteen, practice "defensive parenting" by taking an approach that is both preventative and proactive. Keep teens occupied after school, and model good behavior. At the same time, recognize that they may also become the victim of a violent crime. Prepare them with pepper spray, personal alarms, and other devices, especially if you know they'll be out without adult supervision, such as at the mall or the skate park.
