Main Causes of Water Pollution

Today, the world is facing one of the most serious problems of humanity and other forms of life, pollution. It is a known fact that pollution is very rampant all over the globe. Just look around and you will see rivers, lakes, beaches that are murky, stinky, and lifeless. Plastic, empty cans, bottles, and other trash have replaced the fishes and other wonderful marine creatures that used to reside under water. Yet, when scarcity arises and when epidemics occur many point their fingers to others and turn their backs from the responsibility. But in fact there is no one else to blame but the people. Man is the main cause of water pollution.

People pollute the water with chemicals and other hazardous materials. People have no regard to water - their source of life. They do not realize that this once abundant resource is rapidly being contaminated due to their negligence and carelessness.

Waste disposal has always been a chronic problem, not only because of the quantity of wastes, but because of its kind and the inadequate provision for a good system and technology to address the problem. There are many sources of water pollution but it is not the source that is really causing the problem but the improper disposal of the pollutants. People resort to careless disposal because it is cheaper, more advantageous, or simply convenient to them.

Main Causes of Water Pollution

When you are taking a bath using your favorite shampoo or whenever you wash your laundry using no other than the best detergent in town, it is certain that before buying those products you really never consider asking yourself whether their contents can harm the environment or not. What mattered more was the scent and softness of your hair and the clean comfort of your clothes. Instead of finding an environmental friendly product, you simply chose convenience and your satisfaction of meeting your interests. However, if you will support environmental friendly products and become more conscientious of how you can avoid contributing to water pollution, then the world has gotten rid of one polluter.

In the same way, if chemical factories are only equipped with better facilities that can release treated wastewater, there will be no harm done to the lakes or rivers where they dump their by products. If home owners associations will work to build and provide their subdivisions with sewage treatment facilities, eutrophication can be controlled and dying bodies of water will be spared. But as mentioned, polluters choose the easier way where they can save on operation costs and where they can rid themselves of the hassles of responsibility. Anyway, they are not affected by the effects of their misdeeds.

Aside from improper and careless waste disposal, another main cause of water pollution is toxic substances coming from industrial, agricultural and domestic use. Trace elements of lead, cadmium, mercury, dioxins are detected in different water sources which sometimes accumulate in the water supply causing health problems. These toxic substances come from industries such mining, power plants, automobile manufacturers and others that produce toxic substances leading to bodies of water. Apart from these industries, these toxic materials contaminate the water through accidents like chemical or oil spills.

One more main cause of water pollution is the presence of excessive nutrients in the water. Nitrogen and phosphorous compounds that generally come from sewage, fertilizers, and animal manure are good food sources of algae. Excess nutrients in water also result to excessive growth of algae that deprive aquatic plants and animals adequate levels of oxygen to survive. Because of this many aquatic organisms die and decay which aggravates the problem.

Lastly, another considerable main cause of water pollution is sedimentation. Although it is hard to imagine how soil particles can contribute to water pollution, but it does. When huge amount of solid particles accumulate in water, whether due to deforestation, farming, or soil erosion, the sediments cloud the spawning grounds of fishes leading to their gradual extinction.

Humans greatly affect the environment. People will either be heroes or villains of Mother Nature. Toxic substances, algal bloom, sedimentation are all end results of human activities. These pollutants are not the real evils of water pollution but the people behind every wrong disposal and negligence. Unless man realizes that it is not the prohibition of pollutants nor banning industrial productions that should be changed but the behavior and attitude he possesses towards his environment, the rivers, lakes, and other water systems have no hope to be saved.

Rainforest Deforestation and Its Impact on World Climate

As the world population reaches a crescendo, the need for wood in various forms has only increased. Unfortunately, the naturally occurring wood available in rainforests across the world is becoming a victim of our needs. As the world population reaches a crescendo, the deforestation of naturally occurring woodlands are falling prey to human greed. But more than ever before, rainforest deforestation is impacting world climate and becoming a huge concern for the future of the earth. Let's find out what deforestation is, why it occurs, and how it impacts the global climate.

What is deforestation?

When forests that have been created naturally are cut down or burnt by humans in order to use the wood for various purposes, the process is known as deforestation. Sometimes, this process occurs naturally as well. However, most of the times, this is the handiwork of man. Some of the biggest reserves of wood are the Amazon Rainforests in Brazil, the Congo Basin Forests in Africa, and the Indonesian Rainforest in South East Asia. Deforestation can even be caused by soil erosion or naturally occurring jungle fires.

Rainforest Deforestation and Its Impact on World Climate

Why does deforestation happen?

There are many reasons for rainforest deforestation. Some of the most common and well-known reasons for this include:

- Fuel: trees or the charcoal derived from them is used as fuel. Oftentimes, charcoal is sold in the market as an alternate means of fuel in many countries. Tree branches are also cut, dried, and used as fuel for cooking etc.

- Land use: For many years, human beings have been cutting down trees in order to clear land so that they can use it as pastures for their livestock. As the human population increases, so does the need to feed livestock. Unfortunately, more and more trees are cut to make way for greener pastures for feeding cows, goats, sheep etc.

- Settlements: As habitable land becomes dearer and dearer, people need cheaper land options for settling down. Rainforests present a wonderful opportunity and therefore, people cut down trees to make way for settlements. These trees are removed without proper care and complete apathy for reforestation.

How deforestation impacts global environment?

As the green cover gets destroyed, the fragile ecosystems get destroyed or become imbalanced. Rainforest deforestation also leads to damaged habitats, loss of biodiversity, imbalance in the microenvironment and aridity. Regions that are deforested get affected by soil erosion and soon than later turn in wastelands. It becomes very difficult for this land to be restored back to its former self. Over the years, these wastelands can even become deserts.

Deforestation also leads to extinction of rare trees, animals, insects, flowers and other naturally occurring things. An ongoing issue in many countries, deforestation must be stopped in order to combat their devastating effects on the global climatic conditions.

While there are many other reasons besides population growth for rainforest deforestation, we must remember that deforestation plays a significant role in shaping the global geography and climate and for this reason alone it must be curbed and combated.

Christa Pike's Story - What Does the Case of Christa Gail Pike Say About the State of Society?

When Christa Gail Pike was twenty years old, she was convicted and sentenced to death for a crime she committed when she was eighteen. That is Christa Pike's story. It sounds horrible, doesn't it? A girl so young, her life already over - as, even if she was not put to death, she would surely live out the rest of her life behind bars - at such a young, tender age.

However, there is more to Christa Pike's story than meets the eye.

First of all, the crime she committed was incredibly heinous, and for the pettiest of reasons. She was convinced that the victim, Colleen Slemmer, was trying to steal her boyfriend. But rather than make snide comments about her behind her back as most girls her age would do in that situation, Pike tortured and killed her. She kept a piece of her skull as a trophy and showed it off around her school. That was the level of depravity and indifference to human life that she exibited.

Christa Pike's Story - What Does the Case of Christa Gail Pike Say About the State of Society?

When she was convicted and sentenced to death, many were outraged and heartbroken. Was it because of her gender? If a boy had done such a similarly heinous thing, wouldn't the public be glad to know that he was safely locked away? It seems society has a soft spot for women.

But, in this case, that soft spot was misplaced. Far from being rehabilitated by prison, Pike attempted to murder a fellow prisoner by strangulation only five years after her incarceration.

Why is it so unthinkable to society that we should punish a woman's bad acts as severely as a man's? If you do the crime, you should do the time. Your gender shouldn't matter.

Spiritual Meaning of Numbers - Numbers in the Bible

References to numbers in the Bible begin almost immediately in the Book of Genesis in passages that tell the story of the seven days of Creation. Thus, numbers play an integral role in spiritual writing. The Spiritual meaning of numbers in reference to time, for example, may be literal or symbolism. For instance, God, a supernatural spirit, all-powerful, created the universe in seven days. Or, perhaps, seven days was merely a symbol to facilitate the weaker human's understanding of time. One day in Creation could have been a symbolic reference to one phase, one millennium or ten thousand years. It's impossible to know for certain how long Supernatural Design actually took place. In faith, we accept that which is beyond our human understanding as applied by God.

The Spiritual meaning of numbers play a very important role in helping the faithful to understand supernatural intent. Most religions of the world use chronological time to set standards for religious traditions, rituals and special feast days. But, religious peoples also accept numbers as spiritual signs. The 10 Commandments in the Old Testament stand out as a singular code of behavior for basic human behavior as well as human rights. Numbers in the New Testament play an extremely important role for many Christians who calculate the days of Advent and Lent, the numbers of hours of the Crucifixion and the number of days before Resurrection and Ascension occurred. Catholics, for example, pray a 5-decade rosary and pray before 14 Stations of the Cross.

The Bible, a Testament to the Inspired Word of God, includes numbered passages as well as numbered chapters. In the Old Testament, a closer review of Deuteronomy Verses 1-4, tells of the Israelites, punished by God, wandering 40 years in the desert for refusing to enter the Promised Land. With respectful deference to God's choice of 40 years, the faithful may wonder: "Why 40 years? Why not 5 years or 10 years?". Perhaps, the answer lies in the life span of humans of the day. 40 years was considered a full generation. A full generation, perhaps, to recompense lack of obedience to God. Only a supernatural spiritual being, all-knowing and all-powerful really knows the answer. The spiritual meaning of the number "40" becomes clearer.

Spiritual Meaning of Numbers - Numbers in the Bible

The New Testament, the Book of Revelation in which is described the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse, various visions of the Book's author, John, of Armageddon and Second Coming of the Messiah. It's a Book of 7 cycles of events wherein the number "7" appears often, as well as the frequently misinterpreted number "666". Religious scholars believe the number "666" actually was a numerical reference to Emperor Nero, whose name in Hebrew equals 666. Numbers in the Book of Revelation have been interpreted to calculate the precise year of Armageddon. The Writing of the Book of Revelation is believed to be the work of John the Apostle while on Patmos.

The spiritual meaning of numbers take on special significance when accepted literally and without misinterpretation.

Negative Effects of Global Warming

There are many predicted effects for the environment and for human life due to global warming. The main effect centres around an increase in the global average temperature. It's been confirmed by at least 20 scientific societies and academies of science, as well as all the national academies of science of the G8 states, that the Earth's global average air temperature near its surface rose by 0.56-0.92 C (0.98-1.62 F) degrees during the last 100 years. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that this increase is very likely due to the "observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations, which leads to the warming of the surface and lower atmosphere by increasing the greenhouse effect."

For humans, these changes in climate are particularly dangerous to those who live near the ocean shore and who already suffer from drought, flooding, and poverty.

The IPCC concludes from models that global temperatures will likely rise by 1.1 to 6.4 C (2.0 to 11.5 F) degrees between 1990 and 2100, with the range of temperatures due to the use of differing scenarios of future greenhouse gas emissions and varying degrees of climate sensitivity.

Negative Effects of Global Warming

Other effects of global warming include a rising sea level and changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation. In addition, there may be more frequent and intense weather events, such as more intense hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, thunderstorms, blizzards, etc., though it is difficult to connect specific events to global warming.

Global warming is also causing changes in agricultural yields, glacier retreat, reduced summer stream flows, species extinctions, and increases in the ranges of disease vectors. The increased volumes of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases released by the burning of fossil fuels, land clearing, agriculture, and other human activities are the major reasons why global warming has been occurring and increasing over the last 50 years.

Effects of global warming are expected to cause more changes as it becomes more pronounced; examples include the following projected climate changes (from Wikipedia):

- "A significant slowing of the ocean circulation that transports warm water to the North Atlantic; - Large reductions in the Greenland and West Antarctic Ice Sheets; - Accelerated global warming due to carbon cycle feedbacks in the terrestrial biosphere, and - Releases of terrestrial carbon from permafrost regions and methane from hydrates in coastal sediments."

It is uncertain whether for sure these events will occur or to what severity they will occur if they do, but most believe that the chances of at least one of the above events occurring are likely to increase the longer and more severe climate change becomes.

Some scientific members argue whether there will be positive effects from global warming, but most agree that any positive effects will be greatly outnumbered by the number of negative effects.

Projected climate changes due to global warming have the potential to greatly and irreversibly change our climate that will have lasting impacts on both the continental and global scales. One effect will be increased precipitation, due to the increasing temperature.

As Earth's temperature continues to rise, a very recent report from the IPCC shows that there will be an increasing impact to natural systems and people, especially those who live in Earth's poorer nations. In 2002, Colorado, Arizona, and Oregon endured their worst wildfire season ever. Also in 2002, drought created severe dust storms that caused hundreds of millions of dollars of damage in Texas, Montana, and North Dakota. Since the early 1950s, snow accumulation has decreased by 60%, which has led to some areas of the Cascade Range in Oregon and Washington to have shorter winter seasons.

As you can see, effects of global warming are very negative on our planet already, from increased air temperatures to rises in the sea level to more severe storms. Currently, it is a challenge to predict how many effects global warming will have and how strong those effects will be, but most of the scientific community is predicting that global warming will have more negative effects on our planet and way of life the longer and more severe climate change becomes.
