The Media Circus And Its Impact On Society

One of my earlier articles dwelt on the role of the family in trying to ensure that children were brought up with respect for others and for themselves and this was often achieved by adopting traditional family values which blended love, respect and discipline and relating to each other within the family unit. I will not spend any more time on that topic at the moment, so please read it for yourselves. The bottom line however is that bringing up a family is hard work and a lifelong commitment and that is without the modern drug which all of us are addicted to namely the strength and aggressive nature of the media circus which is beamed into our everyday existence through TV, Papers, Internet, phones and many other mediums.

There is immense pressure these days and this has been finely honed by the media whereby the importance of material ideals does in essence break the traditional values and the family becomes several separate entities within the family location. Mum is organizing the house often around her own employment which she has to do to maintain the materialistic standard of living, Dad is working in the evening to catch up on work that he failed to complete in his normal working day, Johnny is in his bedroom playing video games and Debbie is in her bedroom on the computer and chatting to her friends. This is the scenario for many modern middle class families. However, you then have the opposite extreme in society where money is not available to enjoy this media driven circus and often the only way for these people to live the media way is to take it from someone else. This is only one scenario, the committing of a crime to gain some kind of otherwise unattainable social ranking.

The modern visualisation techniques adopted in the majority of modern films and games can have a devastating affect on the minds of young and old alike. Violence in the extreme covering drug abuse, physical, mental and sexual themes can in many cases replace the reality of everyday life with an unreal world that mixes the above elements into a very dangerous cocktail. Censorship puts an age on the viewing criteria but all too often unsuitable content is easily available and open and innocent minds are brainwashed with totally unnecessary images.

Whilst modern day living is totally dependent on media in one form or another, the balance of what is necessary and what is not really needs to be addressed. Media can create contentment but can also simultaneously create discontentment. The vision of George Orwell and the concept of big brother is most certainly with us.We are all logged and tagged like animals on a farm and held on a vast datafile. The data logging is one element of modern society, the thrust of the media revolution is another and if not controlled it will have far wider reaching effects than we know at the moment and could have even greater impact for subsequent generations.

TV: A Positive Impact on Society

Television, what do you think of when that word is mentioned? People all over the nation have different opinions about TV. When you go to bed at night, or get up in the morning to go to work, do you turn to the news channel to check what the weather is going to be like? When looking for information of current events, local news, or deals to be found at your favorite store, you can find all these things on TV. The good that television brings to our everyday life is absolutely incredible.

September 11, 2001 will always be remembered as part of our history; were you watching television on that day? Millions of people across the country were glued to their sets, receiving up-to-the-minute information of what was happening. TV is one of our most important ways to receive critical information locally, as well as nationally. We should be very thankful that most of us have televisions and can be warned not to eat a certain brand of spinach, because of an E. Coli break out, or to be on alert of a suspected serial killer. When someone receives that kind of information they will usually tell a family member or a friend; thus, bringing more awareness to a dangerous situation. When people are more alert to the dangerous aspect of our society, it also creates a safer community and that is very positive.

TV is a wonderful invention that can give you some well deserved, laughs at the end of a hard day, or can entertain you with some suspenseful story. Tailor what you and your kids watch on television to make it a source of information and entertainment. View with common sense, because we know kids learn by imitation and listening. Stay on top of what is important to you by picking and choosing what you want to watch. Finally, I think TV is a very positive addition to our lives; however, we all should be mindful of what we watch.

Assessing the impact Facebook has had on society since its formal public opening - to anyone over the age of 13 - on 26 September 2006 is rather like assessing the impact of the wheel or steam engine but over a far shorter time-span. To date there have been no definitive studies of this impact, interested parties either concerning themselves with privacy, legal or similar issues, but a wealth of individual comments and publications surrounding cyberstalking, cyberbullying, Internet anonymity and commercialism. Facebook has, however, impacted the way that people react with one another almost to the same extent that the Internet itself, now twenty years old, has with a form of globalization hard to imagine a mere ten years ago. The ability of anyone to contact and connect with others anywhere in the world - with certain governmental restrictions - to follow their exploits and, effectively, be a part of their life has changed the way many people view societal relations.

Initially Facebook was designed as a means for students at Harvard University to contact and connect with one another, the name stemming from the Harvard Facebook issued to all new students as a means of helping them through the initial teething problems of their student life. It began life with a series of legal problems, including initial closure by the Fellows of Harvard University itself and charges of intellectual property theft all of which were either ironed out or settled through a short series of court agreements and judicial or private settlements, the latest being in March 2010.

The main effect Facebook has had on society comes through the effective globalization of communication. Where e-mail was initially considered the great breaking down of communicative barriers, Facebook has taken the level of communication possible several stages higher, allowing not only text communication but the publication of photographs and graphics, the updating of a Status, links to external websites and an ever widening ability to list interests, hobbies and pastimes. Facebook has effectively allowed anyone who is either on a Friends List - for those with strict privacy settings - or with enough time on their hands the ability to search and find others around the entire globe who share similar interests or who, measured on the quantity and quality of information provided, may be of some use to another.

It has also, as some have discovered to their cost, several detrimental aspects. Without effective controls over who becomes a member, Facebook allows individuals and commercial interests the freedom to create profiles which may be false or misleading. With reports of suicides caused by mobbing, terrorism and harassment, Facebookhas become a center of attraction for those whose base interests include demeaning, manipulating and assaulting others through the relatively safe mantle of an anonymous identity. The system of reporting abuse, installed in an effort to prevent such abuses, has itself become a means of terrorizing members through claims of fake identities, inappropriate links or posts and photographs. The only secure method of reporting abuse remains that of copyright or intellectual property violations where an actual item of proof is required before action will be considered.

Further effects Facebook has had on society include a change in the way we react and interact with other people. Where once social interaction was predominantly through meeting a person or other people personally, Facebook allows individuals and groups to contact and communicate with people around the globe, often in areas where one might never have the chance to travel. It allows friends, work colleagues and acquaintances to remain in touch with one another once their ways have parted and bridges the gap of physical distances, for example with families during college and university years. In this aspect Facebookis not alone, as all other social networks allow similar relationships to continue albeit not on the same massive level achieved by Facebook itself.

This ability to connect seemingly effortlessly, to remain in touch and to forge new friendships - although Facebook claims to be a platform dedicated to supporting existing relationships rather than for the formation of new ones - has also resulted in many changes to the way individuals within society treat one another. For some membership of Facebook and the opening of an account is a must, for others a sign that they are distancing themselves from the real world. Time spent, so the argument, on Facebook is time that cannot be spent with friends, reading books, writing letters. Several companies actively ban the use of Facebookas being detrimental to the work environment - a waste of company time - and suggest that use of Facebook, or other social networks, can be so addictive that other more pressing, more important matters are pushed to one side or ignored.

Facebookhas, effectively, constructed a new society of young and old Internet users which is global, lacking in physical borders and many every day restrictions. That personal and to some extent intimate interaction between individuals in the real world, in the physical society in which we live has suffered rests entirely with those who contribute, who participate. These changes, the lack of personal, face to face communication, the loss of social mores and traditions, the almost insular and closed lives that users choose to lead, are likely to increase until, sometime in the not so distant future, we will experience the acceptance of an online society operating alongside that of an actual physical society and hardly be able to tell the difference between the two.

When David Cameron became the 14th British Prime Minister since 1946, he entered number 10 Downing Street with two real problems- a government in debt, and an economy in decline. One solution has been a much publicized, and sometimes ridiculed concept of a "Big Society." What are the advantages and disadvantages of creating a Big Society?

What is a Big Society?

Local state run services are transferred into the hands of community groups and organizations, who effectively take over the existing government run service. Funding is made through a new bank, partly financed by funds left in dormant and expired bank accounts. According to the architect of this plan- David Cameron- communities can take over running local transport routes, public libraries, schools and a whole range of other services.

Four Main Advantages of a Big Society?

1. Many citizens feel that some state run services are inefficient, and badly organized. Transferring these services to local groups and charities, could make them more democratic,

2. Technically people can form a community, and volunteer to run these services which could range from taking over a rural bus service to running a school.- creating independence within a community- instead of dependency on the state.

3. Charities are also "tax free," which means all funding is excluded from state taxation, and any profits can in theory be funneled back into improving the service, based on the needs of the community.

4. The government may save billions, which could be used to pay back a wide range of creditors, and funnel excess funds into improving the services it still runs. The community win, because they get a chance to provide a service they want- without any governmental interference.

What are the Disadvantages of a Big Society?

1. One main disadvantage is that funding may depend on how wealthy the community is who take over the existing bus route or library, and how willing people are to volunteer to help run these services.

2. The UK has had no recent history of mass volunteerism, and many communities are actually a mixture of new arrivals, migrant workers and short-term residents. Accustomed to a welfare state, and needing to earn money in one of the World's most expensive countries- many people may not have the time to volunteer.

3. Free market economies emphasize on self reliance, rather than community reliance. A paradox where volunteerism is needed to keep some services running, but at the same time these they could remain in competition with private business- who profit from running a similar service.

4. Some people believe the UK is a broken society. And in many instances the concept of community may not exist in the traditional sense. "Big Society" on a village level may work, but would it work in an inner-city housing estate?

Past Examples and Probable Solutions

Germany faced similar problems the UK faces between 2000 and 2007. The nation had accumulated debts through its generous social system, whilst its economy was stagnant, and over 35% of the population received some type of payment from the state. The German government had either to cut back or raise taxes.

A defacto form of "Big Society" materialized after sharp cuts in unemployment benefits, and an implementation of a means tested benefit system. The unemployed had to work for an extra 1 euro an hour, on community schemes which were often the former jobs of government employees.

Unemployed Germans "volunteered" to sweep their streets, and maintain dilapidated public buildings and parks for 20 hours a week in order to receive a decreased benefits.

Perhaps the German example could help communities and charities find the people to run the services they are encouraged to take over- from the ranks of the unemployed. This in turn could give people valuable work experience, and help them train for a suitable job.

However their is a flip-side to the German example- Many middle income Germans saved more and spent less, whilst the unemployed opted to work in a low paid job, rather than face remaining on benefits. The Government saved billions of euros, but still raised indirect taxes- and in 2008 took on more debt by bailing out failed German banks.

Another solution is to increase the retirement age, and whoever is unemployed and close to retirement, could assist in running these services, and In some cases train other volunteers- in return for the benefits they receive plus an extra stipend from the charity.

Big society has advantages and disadvantages. Much depends on how the public is encouraged to volunteer, and how these community organizations are initially financed. The big question is whether a society accustomed to a social safety net, could change, and embrace an idea which has already created a very cynical response.

Rules and Society

Most folks agree that we need rules in society to protect people and keep everyone on the same page. For instance, we all agree to stop at stop signs because, if everyone does it, no one gets hurt and everyone knows what to expect, this provides safety to us all. But, what about all the other laws, many are completely arbitrary. Well, we need to ask a few questions when determining if a law, or rule is a good one and if it is not.

Why was the rule created in the first place (the real reason, not always the most obvious).
Who created the rule and what gain did they have in seeing it created?

The way I see it, our society thinks it makes laws and rules, when in reality those in control make the rules or manipulate them, the same way a caveman goes about their daily grind of getting what they want. Most laws are made, or re-worked in order to control.

Rules and Society

Humans love to control things, and as soon as one group gets in charge, another tries to unseat their authority, so they can then lead. Humans are funny, lots of sound and fury, chaos and controversy over nothing, so much they never get much done or advance very quickly, with governments to match, a silly bunch of nonsense at times. You have to laugh.

Suffice it to say, if you deny human nature and sweep it under the carpet, it will bite you in the ass at some point when you walk over it. Another reason, I'll never admit to being human. Nevertheless, we must challenge the authority, laws, and the rule makers and dig a little deeper as to their origins, potential gain, and why they are enacted, or elected.

Most rules really are not made to protect us or help us, but rather to control us and deliver more power to those who are busy scheming the next set of laws to enact. Please consider all this.

The hour was one of the early night when my mother and I made our entrance at Pani Beata's, bearing a message that we hoped would be smiled upon by Gosia, who for her part was nowhere to be found; as we entered the diner. I for the second time that day.

My mother walked at a rushed tempo perhaps made more so by the advancing hour and her anxiety to get this somewhat awkward first encounter; at least the circumstances of which, over with. My mother had no trouble finding a seat at one of the many tables for two, followed closely behind by me who wanted to point Gosia out; to her so she would know to whom she should present her offer to.

"Let me do the talking, but tell me which one of these girls is she and I do hope she speaks English." were the words that my mother said upon taking our seats at Pani Beata's. I could see as I carefully observed that my mother had settled down after that quick cab ride and was giving off that air of a person who was ready to take care of things in the way I had seen her do on so many an occasion. This feeling of relaxation and confidence came over me as well as I just said, "She is familiar with the English language." with an ever slight laugh which went undetected by my mother at her outlandish question; for if she did not how could I have spoken to her. I also told my mother, who had picked up one of the two menus on the table for reasons unknown to me, as I did not think our purpose for being there was to eat, that Gosia must have been in the kitchen but that I would tell her which one she was as soon as she came in to view.

A minute must have gone by before Gosia came to wait on our table, catching me of guard as she approached us from behind while my mother was busy studying the choices on the menu and I observing my mother trying to find reason to why at a time like this she had taken an interest in the items on the menu. By the time I took notice of Gosia's presence, she was standing behind us with an astonishment to match my own. Hers more than likely from seeing me a second time during the same day; sharing a table with a person whom she might have deducted as being my mother. At that point I knew I had lost the option of pointing out to my mother without it being audible to Gosia which one of these several passing waitresses Gosia was.

It was a slightly uneasy moment, with my mother concentrating on the menu in complete oblivion to Gosia, who was standing behind us waiting for my mother to order something or for me to say something but me not knowing what to say other than "hi" to the "good evening" which she had already said with a smile that gave away the curiosity she must have been holding at seeing me again for the second time during the same day. This was one of those silent pauses that seemed to last forever which I found in myself to put an end to as I, with Gosia's attention fixed on my every jest managed to finish by giving my menu consumed
mother a tap on the shoulder which went along with words that I could not have said in a clearer voice had I tried "Mother, this is her. The one I told you about.". I read a certain breaking of tension on Gosia's face which the word "mother" eliminated, as Gosia's thoughts might have read that the lady sitting at my table was not my mother but a romantic acquaintance of mine.

My mother, after putting the menu down on the table pivoted slightly to look Gosia over with eyes that made clear the inspection they were conducting; which was being carried out from head to foot. Almost as if Gosia were merchandise at a department store. This what my mother was up to was not new, as she had examined just about all the girls I had known up till that point but however this visual inspection had a slight twist to it; which was that it was not really about seeing a prospective girlfriend but a prospective piano teacher as well. My mother was or at least it seemed to me, not after the same things she normally tended to look for. She was seeing Gosia as both a mother whose son she might become entwined with but also as someone whom she would be recommending to people who laid heavy importance and trust to her judgment of character as well as musical talent.

I could see as Gosia looked at me, whose glances fell between my mother looking over Gosia and Gosia who stood nervously, not knowing what to say or do under my mother's scrutiny which came to an abrupt conclusion when my mother simply said gazing up from her sitting position in to Gosia's almost freighted eyes; with a no less a relaxed look on her face, while applying stunning formality of voice "Young lady, we are having a very important guest tomorrow for dinner, so could you select something from this menu you like and bring it to my house tomorrow when you come over for dinner at 8 pm?". It was clear, after my mother finished her first sentence that the previous tension between the three of us had given way to a newly found cordiality which seemed to relax Gosia; whose stance and facial expression showed her more at ease though perhaps not completely, as I was able to spot a certain struggle in her to understand what had been said.

Having started my mother continued speaking much slower than usual. This given that Gosia was a foreigner who might not understand her if she chose to speak in her typically accelerated manner "I will of course pay for it now, choose enough food as to feed ten people including desert but please don't have them cook it now but tomorrow before you come to my apartment for dinner.".

Gosia's expression was one of almost disbelieve, as I don't think that an invitation to dinner was what she ever would have expected but she did confirm her compression by saying "I understand; you want me go to you for dinner tomorrow and take food from here for the supper and you will pay now but you want me to pick what we be eating, which they should cook tomorrow, is that correct?"

My mother still with the formality that she was known for continued however this time speaking with more assurance that her listener's English was up to the task of comprehending what she was being told "Yes, I have good news for you. I can recommend you to many people, at least fifteen, who will gladly pay you the sum of 20 dollars an hour for you to give them private piano lessons and you may give these lessons at my apartment; as I have a piano in a room which you may use for the purpose of giving your lessons and I can also get you a job playing the piano at my friends' night clubs but first you will have to let me hear you play before I can recommend you to anybody.".

The Global Philanthropy Group had also started a campaign to ask wealthy people and celebrities, like Ben Stiller and John Legend to use Twitter and Facebook to encourage others to give to UNICEF. An aid worker, Saundra Schimmelpfennig, allowed the advice from other aid workers and donors to post on her blog regarding to choosing which charitable organisations to support. In the meantime, donors were asking questions in Twitter, Facebook and blogs about their donations and endorsements of their favourite charities. After every crisis, the social media for social cause becomes a more effective medium to spread the word.

Whenever someone posts pictures or videos on the web, it becomes viral. When the user deletes a video from his/her social network, someone might have kept it and then posted it onto other sites like YouTube already. People post photographs and video files on social networking sites without thinking and the files can reappear at the worst possible time. In 2008, a video of a group of ACJC students hazing a female student in school on her birthday was circulated and another video of a SCDF recruit being "welcomed" (was hosed with water and tarred with shoe polish) to a local fire station made its way online.

Much news has been reported about online privacy breach in Facebook and Facebook is constantly revising their privacy policy and changing their privacy controls for the users. Interestingly, even when users delete their personal information and deactivate their Facebook account, Facebook will still keep that information and will continue to use it for data mining. A reporter asked whether the data will at least be anonymized. The Facebook representative declined to comment.

In the corporate world, human resource managers can access Facebook or MySpace to get to know about a candidate's true colours, especially when job seekers do not set their profiles to private. Research has found that almost half of employers have rejected a potential worker after finding incriminating material on their Facebook pages. Some employers have also checked the candidates' online details in Facebook pages to see if they are lying about their qualifications. Nowadays, younger generations have a complete disregard for their own privacy, opening doors to unwelcome predators or stalkers.

That comes to 00 a day, ,000 a week. Multiply by 52 weeks a year and you get a whopping 8,000 lost every year. Now they have to implement security measures to control their losses. And it isn't cheap. They have to install cameras, hire security people to watch the cameras and walk the floor, insurance for those people not to mention the salaries for each of them. all those shoplifters.

Though there are poor people in America too, the difference cannot still be compared with some states, most especially in Africa. You will hitch up with me that anyone who has never slept outside in the open cannot appreciate the harsh realities of homelessness; yet that is what abject poverty is all about. He who can lay claim to a house, however humble, or can afford to rent a flat or a room in a town or city without the landlord troubles cannot honestly claim to be poor.

One of the major effects of poverty is sickness and mortality. A poor person is more prone to a poor health. In the society today, things are not done free. No matter what, after every treatment in hospital money is required; now tell me where you want paupers to get such money; when they cannot afford a meal a day! This often leads to the breeding of immoral people who will do anything to achieve their aim in life either getting into armed robbery or prostitution. I believe the governments all over the world still have a lot to do in getting rid of poverty completely in our societies.
